US fish moves from endangered to threatened after population hits 36,000

After more than 30 years of conservation work, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has reclassified the razorback sucker from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The freshwater fish, found only in the Colorado River basin, has recovered through habitat restoration, fish stocking and control of invasive species. However, ongoing threats such as drought, changing river flows and non-native predators mean the species will continue to receive legal protection while recovery efforts move forward.
