The two-year nationwide surveillance study by the ICMR-VRDL network reveals increased risk of severe disease, and fresh challenges for the rollout of future dengue vaccination programmes
The study titled: “Pan-India Molecular Surveillance of Dengue Serotypes, 2023–2025”— notes that India is entering a new epidemiological phase with multiple existing virus strains now circulating together across much of the country.
India's first dengue virus mapping shows all four serotypes circulating in eight states. This finding could influence the country's upcoming dengue vaccine strategy. Researchers found DENV-2 to be the dominant circulating strain across the nation. Concurrent infections with multiple strains are linked to more severe dengue disease. Continuous molecular surveillance is essential for monitoring virus circulation and guiding policy.
