NHPC’s own 2024 paper recorded gas fires in Teesta-VI tunnels before fatal blast
The July 20 incident is likely to have occurred due to an isolated patch near the face of tunnel 4B, which was sudden and gave no indication or time for the safe evacuation of the people working inside the tunnel, the NHPC says
NHPC flagged methane risk months before Sikkim tunnel blast
The documents record a methane leak in January and show that safety measures and equipment to monitor the gas were subsequently recommended and sought. It is not clear from the documents whether all these recommendations had been fully implemented before work resumed
