Solar-powered backpacks to save endangered monarch butterflies in California

Scientists are using tiny solar-powered devices to track endangered monarch butterflies. Researchers are studying how these butterflies use their overwintering habitats and nectar sources. The migratory monarch butterfly was listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2022. This technology helps collect movement data and understand habitat use in California. Citizen scientists can also contribute observations through the Project Monarch app.

Scientists track 1,750 monarch butterflies; 175 detected in Mexico

In an innovative effort, researchers have equipped around 1,750 monarch butterflies with solar-powered trackers to study their extensive migration patterns. This advanced tracking technology offers insights into their traveling habits, including routes, daily distances, and resting points. Every year, these butterflies journey from Canada and the US to Mexico, and recent discoveries highlight the links between migration patterns and North American populations.
